STEFAN BRUGGEMANN THINKING IN HIS STUDIO-HOME IN MEXICO CITY

Stefan Bruggemann photographed thinking and working at his studio-home in Coyoacan, Mexico City. The house used to be the house of Mexican muralist Jose Clemente Orozco, and was designed by Mr. Orozco himself. Mr Bruggemann is currently preparing an exhibition at Lismore Castle in Cork, Ireland curated by Mrs. Aileen Corkery. He is also thinking about a group exhibition that will happen soon inside his studio-home. A Bruggemann original 'Obliteration Neon' hangs on the left wall. Mr. Bruggemann is wearing a jacket by Comme de Garcons.

'VOIDS. A RETROSPECTIVE' AT CENTRE POMPIDOU

Vides (voids) A retrospective
February 25 2009 - March 23 2009
11h00 - 21h00

A quite exceptional event, "Vides" (Voids) is a retrospective of empty exhibitions since that of Yves Klein in 1958. In almost a dozen rooms of the National Museum of Modern Art, it assembles in a totally original manner exhibitions that showed absolutely nothing, leaving empty the space for which they were designed.

The idea of exhibiting emptiness is a recurring notion in the history of art over the past fifty or so years, almost to the point of becoming a cliché in the practice of contemporary art. Since the exhibition by Yves Klein – "The Specialization of Sensibility in the Raw Material State of Stabilized Pictorial Sensibility" in Paris in 1958, totally empty exhibitions have been the statement of different conceptions of vacuums.

While for Yves Klein it was a way to point out the sensitive state, by contrast it represents the peak of conceptual and minimal art for Robert Barry with "Some places to which we can come, and for a while 'be free to think about what we are going to do' (Marcuse)" (1970). It may also result from the desire to fudge the understanding of exhibition spaces, as in the work "The Air-Conditioning Show" from Art & Language (1966-1967), or to empty an institution to modify our experience, as in the work by Stanley Brouwn. It also reflects the will to create the experience of the qualities of an exhibition venue, as with Robert Irwin and his exhibition at the ACE Gallery in 1970, or with Maria Nordman at her exhibition in Krefeld in 1984. Emptiness also represents a form of radicalness, like that created by Laurie Parsons in 1990 at the Lorence-Monk gallery, which announced his renouncement of all artistic practice. For Bethan Huws and his work "Haus Esters Piece" (1993), emptiness means being able to celebrate the museum's architecture, signifying that art is already there on site and there is no need to add works of art. Emptiness assumes almost a sense of economic demand for Maria Eichhorn who, in leaving her exhibition empty at the Kunsthalle Bern in 2001, helped to devote the budget to the building's renovation. With "More Silent than Ever" (2006), Roman Ondák, for his part, had the onlooker believing that there is more than what is just left there to be seen.

PETITION AGAINST HOME OFFICE RESTRICTIONS ON NON-EU ARTISTS AND ACADEMICS

From: Emily Pethick
Date: Mon, 23 Feb 2009 10:26:40 +0000
Subject: Petition against Home Office restrictions on non-EU artists and academics

Dear friends and colleagues,

I'm writing to draw your attention to a petition that has been formed against the new Home Office restructions to non-EU artists and academics.

In January Russian artist Dmitry Vilensky was twice refused a Visa to enter the UK on account of the fact that he was to earn a small fee for a seminar that was co-organised by The Showroom and Afterall. Since then we have become more aware of the recent changes in restrictions that make it difficult and expensive for arts organsations to bring artists and academics from outside of the EU.

The civil liberties group, The Manifesto Club along with Manick Govinda of Arts Admin, The Showroom, Afterall and other arts groups are working hard to get the message across that these parochial and suspicious regulations need to be reconsidered, and re-affirm the vital contribution made by global artists and scholars to UK cultural and intellectual life.

A campaign website and a petition have been set up:

http://www.manifestoclub.com/visitingartists

The petition can be accessed via the Manifesto Club webpage through the above link.

Following the campaign, there has also been a report on this matter in The Observer:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/feb/22/immigration-arts-gormley
http://www.guardian.co.uk/theobserver/2009/feb/22/9

A public meeting will be held in late spring/early summer to consolidate, discuss and co-ordinate further action on this issue. We are looking for a space to host this meeting, so any offers would be greatly appreciated.

We will hope that you will support this initiative and please continue to spread the word.

Yours sincerely,

Emily Pethick

CHRISTODOULOS PANAYIOTOU 'NEVERLAND' AT RODEO

NEVER LAND

Christodoulos Panayiotou

Preview/ açılıs: 24.02.09 18-21

Exhibition/ sergi: 25.02.09 – 04.04.09
Open/ açık: tue-sat 12-18/ salı-cum 12-18

Rodeo is very pleased to announce the first Istanbul solo exhibition of Limassol born, Berlin based artist Christodoulos Panayiotou.

The exhibition takes its name after the three-channel synchronized slide show Never Land, one of the three works presented at the gallery. Never Land (first shown at the Taipei Biennale 2008) is an abstract scenario on the subject of failure. Composed after research in the archives of the oldest newspaper in the Island of Cyprus “Phileleftheros”, the work proposes a view on the decade of the 90s, the socially and politically charged period during which Cyprus was in the process of becoming a member of the European Union.

Wonder Land (single slide projection), the second work presented in the exhibition, is the outcome of extensive research in the municipal archives of the city of Limassol pointing out the obsession of locals to disguise into Disney characters during the carnival parade (one of the most important social events on the island). The work covers the period from late 70s up to 2007.

To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause is the audio recording of the performance under the same title, which took place on a boat traversing the Aegean Sea in September 2007. Seven songs from American musicals of the cold war and that use weather metaphors for utopian projections are performed by the singer Kristian Finne Kristensen. The performance is part of a project under the general title Let it shine which was initiated in Istanbul while the artist was a resident at Platfrom-Garanti and which documents the way in which ordinary meteorological reports constitute the subversive language of politics and political ideology.

“Originally trained in dance and performing arts in Lyon and London Panayiotou's works are performance-based and collectively span every level of what one could describe as a spectrum of the performative in art – from creating a space for an activity such as dancing, directing actors and events, to the recording and tracing of both the artist's and society's 'performances'. Formed in a range of media, often incorporating video and sound within installations Panayiotou's aesthetic interventions often reference political stimuli and yet can be read in a multitude of ways. In 2005 Panayiotou won the 4th DESTE Prize from the DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Athens, Greece. He has recently exhibited in The Museum Of Modern Art Oxford, UK, 2006; The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens, 2007; Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center Istanbul, 2006 (where he has also been a resident artist the same year); Den Frie, Copehagen, 2007, The Busan Biennal (2008), Taipei Biennale (2008).” (N.P)

Panayiotou is currently a resident artist in Kunstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, where his solo exhibition opens in March 2009. In the coming months will be exhibiting at MOCA Miami and the 2nd Athens Biennial.

DIEGO BERRUECOS 'PRI: GENEALOGIA DE UN PARTIDO' AT GAGA IN MEXICO CITY

Diego Berruecos
PRI : Genealogy of a Party
Opening Saturday February 7th from 12:00 to 4pm
Exhibition open until March 28th.

Born in Mexico City, 1979, Diego Berruecos studied his BA at the London College of Printing. His work, consisting mainly of long-term photographic projects, often begins with a simple idea. This idea develops and transforms into an interesting documentation of socio-political research and, thanks to the artist's input, eventually appears to have no connection at all with the original idea itself.

For his second solo show in Mexico City, Berruecos reveals the result of his ongoing research on the PRI, Partido Revolucionario Institucional, the political party that governed Mexico for over 60 years.

Through both the first and the second part of the project (compiled of reading material, archives and images taken by Diego), the artist presents us with an investigation that could be deemed futile, senseless and unnecessary.

What can be said that has not been mentioned before about this political institution?
How can one 'enter' such an incomprehensible subject through the medium of photo?
What is Diego's viewpoint on all these matters?
Such questions arise when one talks about the PRI and its history leaving us to ponder whether (or not) they are answered through the artist's work.

"Although talking about the PRI might seem repetitive, approaching it through photography might help solve the complex puzzle of Mexico's history. Genealogía de un partido, reveals, through archive and unprecedented images, a visualization of myths, common sayings, and stories that reflect historic problems still in existence today and clearly reveal the way in which a political party functions and in many ways, Mexico itself.

What is exhibited here is the result of an ongoing investigation that has the PRI as its core subject. This research provides us with a branching of images from its conception to the present day through an analysis of its policies in language, landscape, collective memory and architecture.

Due to the extensive nature of such a subject, this collection of images focuses more on the obvious ways in which the PRI has obtained acceptance and dominion in society. Therefore the structure of this genealogy will continue to change and grow in personal and fortuitous ways.
The political omnipresence of the PRI is reflected throughout the country and often goes unnoticed just as many of the pictures in this exhibition depict.

Images of the glorification of a party or a politician captured in a monument, a movie star or a football match; images that show the physical prescence of the party and its unceasing dynamics."

Diego Berruecos, January 2009, Mexico City.

PARIS, A VISIT TO KADIST FOUNDATION: PIERRE LEGUILLON FEATURES 'DIANE ARBUS: A PRINTED RETROSPECTIVE, 1960–1971'

Matthieu Laurette's work inserted in between Diane Arbus' work

Pierre Leguillon features
Diane Arbus : A Printed Retrospective, 1960–1971

December 6, 2008 — February 8, 2009

At Kadist Art Foundation Pierre Leguillon presents the first retrospective of the works of Diane Arbus (1923–1971) organized in France since 1980, bringing together all the images commissioned to the New York photographer by the Anglo-American press in the 1960s. The exhibition will present the original pages of the magazines, including ‘Harper’s Bazaar’, ‘Esquire’, ‘Nova’ and ‘The Sunday Times Magazine’. Always conceived specifically by Diane Arbus for the press medium, these photographs are showcased in their original format for the first time.

This private collection consists of more than 150 photographs, demonstrating Diane Arbus’ discreet point of view through a great variety of subjects: reportage, anonymous or celebrity portraits (Norman Mailer, Jorge Luis Borges, Lilian et Dorothy Gish, Mia Farrow, Marcello Mastroianni, Madame Martin Luther King...), children’s fashion, and several « photographic essays », with captions or comments by the photographer herself.

By presenting the original magazines, the exhibition emphasizes the formal choices related to layout, and places the photographs back in the social or political context of that time.

Pierre Leguillon introduces a few texts or images by other photographers in the exhibition (including Walker Evans, Annie Leibovitz, Victor Burgin, Wolfgang Tillmans, la Documentation Céline Duval or Matthieu Laurette), as direct or indirect references to the images presented. The display offers unprecedented connections underlining the actuality of this major 20th century body of work.
