February 20 – March 17

Galeria Comercial is pleased to present Planté Bandera, the second solo show of Carolina Caycedo (UK, 1978) in the gallery.

In Planté Bandera, Caycedo presents a selection of videos, photographs and objects that signal the frontiers and distances produced in multiple levels by the global economic system. Through a series of works where she explors other forms of comunication, movement and exhcnage, Caycedo takes action against this limitations.

These actions are presented as small, yet powerful attempts to recover individual space and social action. Through them Caycedo reminds us that the capacity art has of afecting society can be activated through small individual actions.

This Place is My Place – Begehrte Orte (Desired Spaces)

The exhibition This Place is My Place - Begehrte Orte (Desired Spaces) combines works by seven international artists who explore the economic, social, political, and cultural impact of globalization. According to Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt’s seminal workEmpire, we are in a new phase of capitalism characterized by postmodern lifestyles, postfordist relations of production, and methods of sovereignty based on the society of control. Against the backdrop of these developments, national boundaries are increasingly being relativized by the economic activities of transnational corporations. The appropriation of space takes place both concretely as the seizure of territory, and symbolically through the expansion of spheres of influence.

The following questions are central to the exhibition This Place is My Place -
Begehrte Orte (Desired Spaces): How do artists today relate to the phenomena described?

How, for instance, do they react in their work to the politically or economically motivated
occupation of land? The art projects presented in the exhibition explore, among other
things, the impact that transnational corporations have on local cultural and
economic systems, and the migratory movements induced by globally operating concerns. Some of the works examine the ways in which architecture and urban planning in the megametropolises have changed, and how this effects the social situation of their inhabitants. Thus, for instance, architectural hybrids resulting from the collision of different architectural languages and economic resources are to be seen in the exhibition. The confrontation between cultures and between economic systems is also reflected in those installations that deal with news coverage in the media. The deliberate use of cliché and the manipulation of how events are presented reveal more about the intentions behind film and newspaper reports than about the reality of the events in question. The distinction between fiction and reality collapses in these works to provide a fitting illustration of the equivocal relations that characterize our age.

This Place is My Place - Begehrte Orte (Desired Spaces) is a comprehensive exhibition and presents works in the media of film, photography, installation, and murals. It embraces the entire 1,000 m2 of the main exhibition hall on the upper floor of the Kunstverein.

MILTOS MANETAS 'EXISTENTIAL COMPUTING', THEORY AND WORKSHOP AT THE HAYWARD GALLERY, LONDON

EXISTENTIAL COMPUTING is a Theory and it starts now:

PART 1, SENTIMENTALITY:
A 5 DAY WORKSHOP WITH MILTOS MANETAS AT THE HAYWARD GALLERY
1. There is "sympathy" between humans and computers, there are "feelings".
1.1 In both directions.
2. There are new theories about time. Maybe time doesn't even exist!
3. People meet and exchange information. There are institutions such as The Hayward that invite artists such as myself to talk to people. I suspect it is just data that they
want to know about each other.
4. Art is what is happening when data meet beautifully. This is very rare.

Website of the project (under construction):
http://existentialcomputing.com

Miltos Manetas is an internationally renowned artist born in Greece in 1964.
Manetas makes websites that are art works, they hang on the internet as a painting hang on the walls of a museum. Manetas signs them as unique pieces and collectors buy them as such. (see: jacksonpollock.org). In 2000, he started Neen (neen.org), a new art movement. More about Manetas: www.manetas.com

Join Miltos at The Hayward for a five-day workshop to explore digital art and work together to create a work that will be showcased at The Hayward on Saturday 3 March.

The "Digital Dialogues" series of workshops are part of the 100 IDEAS programme.
Time: 12pm – 5pm
Dates: 13 – 17 Feb 2007

Organized within the celebrations of the Declaration of San José as the Iberoamerican Capital of Culture 2006, this event also considers as one of its themes the 150th anniversary of the military campaign of 1856 which ended with the expulsion of American filibuster William Walker from Central America. The Minister of Culture has declared it a Cultural Interest Project and it includes the participation of six museums and several public spaces in the city. The project has the logistic support of the Mayor of San José.

The title of this event refers to the denomination of “Doubtful Strait” that the Spanish Conquistadors used to refer to the Central American isthmus, as they could not find the strait they were looking for in order to attain the Spice Islands. This event, wishes to pick up (and revert) the misunderstanding, the gap in relation to the expectations of the other. But above all, it is about re-inserting that doubt in the present context, of a region that might continue to be doubtful, but in any case, that continues to doubt. This event, while engaging in an international scope, does however stem from a strong feeling of belonging and reflection on Place, and on where each one locates himself. With the recent globalization processes and the growing flux of people, information, cultures, it would seem the world has become narrower, more connected, closer. However, this “strait” would also be “doubtful” inasmuch as these global processes have been accompanied by an increase in the physical and symbolic limits, a proliferation of security systems as web as control and surveillance instruments.

This event is interested in strengthening the relations between artists and proposals. At a time when diversity is one of the main topics behind so many projects, our desire is more to work within the common aspects that can be shared within this diversity, so that this may contribute to a larger and better understanding of artistic practices in distant points of the world. This project also seeks to create an atmosphere of contemplation and enjoyment of art, however anchored in a deep thought generated by critical work, articulated through a dialogue between works.

This project is possible through the generous support of HIVOS (Netherlands) and the Ford Foundation (New York/Mexico). The catalogue will be published thanks to the support of the Getty Foundation (Los Angeles).

GENERAL IDEA 'EDITIONS 1967-1995' AT CAAC SEVILLA

GENERAL IDEA. EDICIONES 1967 - 1995.
